The Graduated Response

At Cotford St Luke Primary School we use Somerset’s Graduated Response tool to identify needs and next steps for our children. This is used from Reception upwards.

Initially, if a teacher feels that a child needs further support, they will use the ‘Quick Checker’ tool to indicate which out of four areas your child may need further support. The 4 areas are:

- Communication and Interaction

-Cognition and Learning

-Sensory and Physical

 -Social, Emotional and Mental Health.

The teachers will then use the graduated response tool to look at what further support they can provide in the classroom to meet your child’s needs at a Universal level. Once they have identified next steps, they will also complete three rounds of an assess, plan, do, review cycle to see if the adaptations put in place are effective. If after these 3 rounds it is felt that the support has not helped the teacher would talk to the SENDCo and with the parents fill out an initial cause for concern form.

At this stage your child may join our SEN register.

External Support

At Cotford St Luke Primary School we engage with and have access to a range of external support such as play therapists, educational psychologists and speech and language therapists. We work closely with these external agencies where necessary to ensure all our children are having all their needs met.
