Year 3
We use the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach (CPA) to teach mathematics. All the written methods are the final steps, the abstract written methods. Before these, children practically manipulate objects and draw what is happening pictorially before using the digits in numbers. This approach to teaching should help more children, especially those who learn in a visual way.
When a child is learning we face them with a range of number problems and questions to explain their thinking (reasoning and problem solving), they will no longer just be posed with a calculation to solve.
